I bought this book and read it awhile ago It is really quite a collection of poetry. Poetry by a Hickory, NC author Based on his experiences working as a night clerk at a local motel Reads like a novel written in poems Captivating, funny, heart breaking wonderful read. Aging can have certain surprising benefits less hair to worry about, getting a drink without ID, and having enough knowledge and experience to forge meaningful relationships with those you admired in youth Last year, I had the great pleasure of reviewing a book of poems by my undergraduate creative writing instructor, Paul Nelson, whom I hadn t seen or communicated with in nearly 30 years This year, I find myself reviewing a new book from another of my early poetry crushes, Tim Peeler.I first encountered Peeler s work about 20 years ago when I was still confused about what to write and how to write about it His poetry then was about things that were very familiar to me trailer parks, farms, small town Southern life and it was written in a way that was approachable, observant, objective, and understatedly real Those poems served as models to me, in a sense giving me permission to write in a certain way about certain things I had been wanting to write about and have been writing about ever
I ve read this a few times now, and it just keeps getting better For me, Peeler s easygoing style belies much of the impact these poems have There is a quiet center to the whole work, no matter how far afield the narrator takes us The characters and situations that swing in the orbit of the motel are introduced and respectfully given the spotlight and mic for a moment, and then they are gone You ll find yourself reflec
